Never heard of Untangle until this morning. I'm currently running three Linux (RH8) boxes with Shorewall and FreeSwan VPN to link three offices. They also serve as proxies for Google Web Security Internet filtering and as tftp servers for our phones. I plan to replace them soon (probably with a similar setup running on a newer Linux distro). Are there reasons I should consider using Untangle instead?
Is the free version robust enough to support point-to-point VPN's? I'm not unwilling to pay something if there's a reason to, but I'm not a fan of per-PC pricing (strikes me as artificial and gimmicky).
First off Untangle is Linux, its base is Debian. Many of the components it uses are open source as well. VPN is no problem, we use it extensively and have never had a problem.
The VPN part is Open VPN. TFTP server would take hacking to get it working and you would probably have to re-hack every update as Untangle overwrites most of the stuff on an update. Same with using it to proxy Googles Web Security.
It has its own filtering built in so other filters arent supported. Its always worth looking at something new but to be honest I am not sure Untangle is the right product for you unless you can accept it for what it is. I recently revewed what we were using and all of the other products were per PC as well so they arent alone in this practice. One thing that did stand out in comparison to say Barracuda, Blox and the like was how much it does with so little. These all require different servers for mail and web filtering increasing the costs hugely where Untangle has it all on one box that you supply. If you have the knowledge I am sure something better could be built from all the open source products out there but for the likes of me with limited Linux know how Untangle is pretty much a load it, make a few settings and leave it alone product which does what it does well.
