The war between government and media that marked the Kirchner years has eased up since Mauricio Macri became president in December 2015, but the polarization between state-owned and privately-owned media still exists. 
The 2009 media law, which encouraged pluralism and provided for a better distribution of frequencies between state, privately-owned, and community media, was modified as soon as Macri took over. The new legislation encourages a greater concentration of media ownership, especially in the hands of large media groups. Media outlets regarded as overly critical are often the targets of defamation suits that usually end with damages awards designed to strangle them financially. Several reporters were targeted and attacked by police during major street protests in 2017.
