Good morning. I've been doing a few searches but failed to find the information I was looking for so please forgive me if this is old news and I was just looking in the wrong place. I have a VS 12 gauge sidelock which was rescued from the crusher and with some help from a gunmaker who was kind enough to show me the traditional methods for wood renovation along with his work on the hardware has given a new lease of life to something which obviously had a hard working life on a farm. When I first saw it there was virtually no blueing left on the barrels and the woodwork was dented, scratched and in a hell of a mess. The serial number is 6 digits beginning with 236.
I would describe the engraving as tight scrollwork and although it was originally colour case hardened, most of this has now gone. It has cocking indicators which I understand were not on all models if that helps with the id.
I would like to know if possible what model and year that it is. Thanks for any help that you can give. Not sure if the image has loaded correctly. ************************ Error received when trying to attach a 32k picture file. I need clear, close-up photos of the engraving pattern to positively I.D. Your gun but, it appears to be a Model 6 or 6E. A 236xxx serial number would indicate a late 1970's production.
There should be a date code stamped on the watertable of the frame. Go to the Spanish Shotgun forum and click on the 1st topic, 'Proof Marks/Date Codes, etc. BTW, all Victor Sarasqueta sidelock actions have cocking indicators (I can't think of any sidelock makes that don't). Some makers have produced boxlocks with cocking indicators (early NID Ithaca, Merkel, Sauer, Simpson, FEG, etc.). Lets see those pixs. Montani Semper Liberi. Thanks for your reply.
Here is some more detail. After the pics I'll clarify the text in the proof mark boxes. Ok, so to the first photo and slightly fuzzy proof marks: On the lower section in the picture to the left of the visible '900K' starting from left to right: 'X' inside the box with with the tiny crest '2' in the centre off the 2 crossed guns 'BP' on top of a squashed 'O' in the plain shield 'CH' inside the shield with 2 crossed swords I think I found the age mark too as 'U1' which according to the sheet you referred me to makes it 1976. Please let me know if I've missed the important bits. If the quality is not good enough to id I'll borrow a decent digi camera and try again.
