Sorry for delay; been trying to get a better handle on the behavior; seems to happen frequently during video playbacks like youtube; but sometime does it when nothing running except desktop. To answer your questions: Crtl + Alt + F1 does NOT return as a console with a prompt; BUT once out of 20 or so times the follow up with Ctrl + Alt + F7 returned a partially functioning desktop.

The first thing I noticed about the Gigabyte Brix BACE-3150 was that it felt heavier than I expected for such a small computer. The second thing was that, well, it is a small computer.

I have run memtest for an hour with no failures. Looked for additional video drivers; no luck. It runs Intel video driver. I have a friend who tried pinging it through the network with no results. Latest crash this a.m. Was during a youtube video and looking in CRASH folder the filename points toward the date and time software.

There may have been a time where Intel Graphics weren't necessarily well supported on Linux, but that is no longer the case. GB-BKi5HT2-7200 is a nice box with recent Intel chipset and recent iris graphics chipset. The older Brix Pro also with iris graphics had no issues and currently runs well with ArchLinux and boots into LEGACY BIOS or UEFI if I recall correctly. Follow the wiki for configuring your graphics drivers for an X desktop and LXDE or GNOME and you'll be fine.

That means install mesa, vaapi, xf86-video-intel and libdrm essentially. I couldn't find anywhere some information about availability. They are listed on the gigabyte webpage for months, but you can't buy them. So I own a KabyLake Intel NUC and works with Arch out of the box, even the microphone and bluetooth (sd card reader I haven't tried). But I'd say you'll have a similar experience with the Brix. The thunderbolt support in linux is getting lots of attention recently, so for that arch is a good choice with its up-to-date kernels. As of Kernel 4.12, also all USB-C functionality works (Dispalyport over it, can connect USB-C hdds).

One thing I noticed is that Intel releases one bios update after the other, while the Brix have very infrequent releases, if at all. Now the Intel NUCs also needed them, as they initial bios was utter crap. But for Gigabyte I don't know if this means they have a rock-solid bios or if they just don't get much love.
